With the spread of AI-powered search, many businesses think only in terms of content production, question-and-answer blocks or new optimization tricks. Every day, new recipes appear about “how to get into ChatGPT answers,” while a much more basic question remains unanswered: can the search system access the website’s content at all? A significant share of generative search systems still work from search indexes, crawled websites and machine-processable content. That is why search engine optimization in 2026 is not a legacy of the past, but the technical foundation of AI visibility.

Google’s search process is essentially built on three steps: crawling, indexing and serving the appropriate results. Click each step and see where the process can break down:

The search robot discovers URLs through links, sitemaps and previously known addresses, then tries to download the content of the pages. If no accessible link leads to a URL, or if robots.txt blocks access, the process gets stuck already here — the page practically does not exist for the search system.

Important: not every discovered page automatically reaches all three stages. And this is exactly where technical SEO becomes decisive in AI search as well.

Why is technical SEO important in AI-powered search?

AI-powered search systems can reliably process only web content they can find, access, render and interpret. Incorrect robots.txt settings, noindex directives, faulty canonical tags, incomplete internal linking or content hidden behind JavaScript can prevent an otherwise valuable page from entering the search index and the pool of sources AI can use.

AI visibility is not a ranking trick, but an eligibility question

Most conversations about AI visibility focus on how to “rank higher” or “get cited more often.” But that is the second half of the process. The first half is a much more fundamental question: is the page eligible for the search system to use it at all?

This is what we call technical eligibility. A page must first become suitable for inclusion in the set of documents a search system can use. Only after that can the system decide whether the content is relevant, accurate and credible enough for appearance or citation. Technical eligibility has five conditions:

The page URL is discoverable.
The search robot is allowed to access the page.
The server delivers the content without errors.
The main content is processable and indexable.
The page’s relationship to the rest of the site is clear.

Important distinction: good technical SEO does not guarantee AI appearance. Serious technical errors, however, can prevent it.

Google also does not guarantee crawling, indexing or serving for every compliant page. Technical compliance is therefore not an automatic ranking, but a prerequisite for entering the competition. The first obstacle is crawlability

During crawling, search robots discover URLs and try to download page content. This process works through links: the robot starts from already known pages, follows hyperlinks and reaches new content this way. If no accessible link leads to an important service page from the menu, other content or the sitemap, the search system may have a much harder time finding it — regardless of how valuable the information on that page is.

What can block crawling?

In practice, the most common crawlability obstacles are:

  • incorrect robots.txt settings;
  • incorrect or missing XML sitemap;
  • orphan pages without internal links;
  • filters that generate endless URL variations;
  • URLs containing session IDs;
  • redirect chains;
  • faulty 404 and 5xx server responses;
  • servers that respond too slowly or unreliably;
  • navigation that appears only after user interaction.

The role of robots.txt deserves special attention because there are many misunderstandings around it. Robots.txt primarily regulates crawling. By itself, it is not the right tool for reliably excluding a page from the index: a blocked URL that is linked from elsewhere may still appear in search results in certain cases, even without its content.

Practical example: a company creates twenty detailed expert articles but does not connect them with category pages or internal links. The pages exist and the content is excellent, but they are almost invisible within the site structure. In this case, the AI visibility problem is not content-related, but technical and structural.

The most effective way to detect these kinds of errors is an AI visibility audit that also examines crawlability and indexability, listing not only the errors but also ranking their business impact.

Crawling does not yet mean indexing

Many people are surprised when they see the message “Crawled — currently not indexed” in Search Console reports. Yet these two stages are sharply separated. The role of canonical tags

Choosing a canonical URL helps the search engine select the primary version among identical or highly similar pages. Used well, it creates order: it makes clear which version should represent the content in the search index. Used incorrectly, however, it can be destructive. A faulty self-reference, a product canonical pointing to a category page, or contradictory signals can make important pages practically invisible — without the user noticing anything.

Ecommerce example: a single product can be reached from multiple categories, search filters and campaign-tagged URLs. Without proper canonical handling, the search engine must decide which version should be primary — and it may not choose the one the webshop wants. This phenomenon is one of the most common sources of indexing and duplication problems in online stores.

The risk of content hidden in JavaScript

Modern websites often display content using JavaScript. That is not a problem in itself — Google can process JavaScript — but the solution works well only when the search system can actually access the important text and links on the final rendered page.

In practice, it is worth examining the following elements:

  • whether the main text appears in the downloaded HTML;
  • whether the content loads if a JavaScript error occurs;
  • whether navigation links are available as standard hyperlinks;
  • whether a click or scroll is required for the content to appear;
  • whether the mobile robot and the user see the same thing;
  • whether any resource blocks rendering.

Standard, crawlable links and stable rendering remain basic requirements. A site can be built on the most modern framework, but if critical content becomes available to the robot only after a click, a scroll or a script that runs without error, the structure is fragile.

Main message: a visually impressive interface cannot replace an accessible information structure. From the perspective of an AI system, unloaded text is not premium content — it is missing data.

The internal link system shows what each page is about

Internal links are not merely navigation elements — they are among the most important signals a website gives about itself. This is where technical SEO connects with content-based and entity-based search optimization: the link structure is both technical infrastructure and a semantic map.

A well-built internal link system helps with:

  • discovering new URLs;
  • recognizing relationships between topics;
  • interpreting the importance of pages;
  • connecting service and knowledge materials;
  • building the site’s professional topic map.

Google officially uses links to discover new pages and to interpret relevance between pages. Clear anchor text also helps both users and search systems understand what is on the target page — even before anyone clicks.

What does an AI-compatible internal link structure look like?

It consists of detailed articles, service pages, concept explanations, case studies and frequently asked questions connected around a central pillar page. The structure is not a random pile of links, but a deliberately built topic map in which every link marks a clear relationship.

Equally important: avoid meaningless anchor texts everywhere, such as “click here,” “more information” or “read more.” Use anchor text that makes clear what the target page contains. This is not only an SEO question — it also makes it easier for decision-makers to see how AI visibility supports business growth.

Structured data helps machine interpretation

Structured data describes page content in a standardized, machine-processable way. While a human reader infers from context, machine systems need explicit markup to know with confidence: what is the price, who is the author, and which company stands behind the content.

Structured data can help clarify:

  • which organization the page belongs to;
  • who the author is;
  • which service is being discussed;
  • which content is an article;
  • which data is a price, rating or availability;
  • how the different elements of the brand are connected.

Let’s clarify a common misunderstanding: a perfect speed score by itself does not secure AI appearance. The role of performance is more nuanced — it indirectly affects several areas that are critical for visibility:

  • it reduces failed loads;
  • it improves user experience;
  • it supports stable content rendering;
  • it reduces server load;
  • it supports mobile access;
  • it may make large websites easier to crawl efficiently.

Core Web Vitals measure real-user loading performance, interactivity and visual stability. Google recommends achieving good values, but also emphasizes that there is no single page experience metric that overrides everything else. Speed is therefore not the goal, but a tool: it ensures that neither the user nor the search robot gets stuck along the way.   • interpretable for machines;
