Google no longer only provides a list of results — it also provides ready-made answers. What does this mean for the organic traffic of Hungarian websites, and how can a business emerge as a winner from this transformation?

Imagine the following completely everyday situation. An online store owner types into Google: “what is the best SEO strategy for a Hungarian online store?” A few years ago, they would have opened three or four results, compared the articles, and then spent time on one of the pages. Today, for the same question, they may receive a direct AI-generated summary — without clicking through to a single website.

This shift raises legitimate questions for every business leader and marketer. What happens if the user already receives the answer on the search results page? Will every website’s organic traffic decline? Is it still enough to secure one of the top three positions? And perhaps most importantly: how can a Hungarian website become a cited source in the AI summary?

This article does not predict the end of search engine optimization. Instead, it presents the new organic visibility model: how traffic structure is changing, which page types are most affected, and what concrete steps a Hungarian business can take to prepare. What is Google AI Overviews, and how does it work?

Quick answer

Google AI Overviews is an AI-generated summary that attempts to answer the user’s question directly based on multiple internet sources — above the traditional results list, supplemented with source references.

AI Overviews is a generative AI answer block that appears on Google’s search results page. It does not highlight the content of a single website; it can combine information from multiple web sources into one coherent answer. It is important to know that it does not appear for every search: Google’s systems activate it when they determine that a summary may be genuinely useful — typically for more complex questions that require explanation.

Links to sources may also appear next to or inside the answer, so the user can receive a basic answer without leaving the page — but can also click through if they need deeper information. And here is one crucial detail: AI-generated answers can be wrong. That is exactly why reliable, clear and well-structured sources are not becoming less important; they are becoming more valuable.

It is also worth clearing up a common misunderstanding: AI Overviews is not a separate search engine. According to Google’s official guidance, AI features still build on Google’s core search, indexing and quality systems. In other words, what used to be a good SEO foundation remains a good foundation in the AI era — only the stakes have become higher. In Hungary, the topic is no longer theoretical: according to Google’s official help documentation, AI Overviews is also available in Hungary.

Why does AI Overviews change organic traffic?

The change becomes easiest to understand when we compare the old and new search process side by side. Click the buttons and see the difference:

Entering a keyword. The user types a short phrase, such as “SEO agency Budapest.”

Reviewing the results list. They scan titles and descriptions and compare options.

Selecting a website. They click on one or more results.

Decision: is the answer enough? The user either ends the search or clicks only the most relevant source.

Being included in the answer becomes the real stake. It becomes increasingly important which brands and websites appear inside the AI answer itself.

The spread of zero-click searches is already a measurable phenomenon. According to a US study by Pew Research, when an AI summary appeared on the results page, users clicked a traditional result in only 8 percent of searches — without an AI summary, this rate was 15 percent. An Ahrefs analysis published in February 2026 also showed that the presence of AI Overviews could significantly reduce the click-through rate of even the first-ranked page in the analyzed queries.

Important: these data points refer to the US market. They should be treated as directional indicators, not exact forecasts for Hungary.

One thing is already clear: the center of competition is shifting. It is no longer enough to think only in rankings — being included in the answer is becoming the new first place. Fewer clicks do not necessarily mean less business

Now comes perhaps the most important and nuanced point of the article. The quantity of traffic and the value of traffic are not the same — and in the AI Overviews era, this difference becomes decisive for business.

Google will indeed answer some simple informational questions. As a result, clicks may decline for queries that never had serious purchase or contact intent behind them. Someone who only wanted to understand what a term means rarely became a customer anyway — and now they may not reach the website at all. This can be painful in traffic reports, but it matters much less for business results.

At the same time, the user who still clicks through to a website after seeing the AI summary is typically:

  • looking for more detailed, deeper information than the summary provided;
  • closer to a decision because their basic questions have already been answered;
  • trying to choose a specific product or service provider;
  • looking for a quote, price, case study or expert proof.

According to Google’s own communication, clicks from AI Overviews result pages may be higher quality, and these visitors may spend more time on the destination page. This should be interpreted carefully: it is Google’s own claim, not a guarantee for every website — but the logic also makes business sense. The filter enters the process earlier, so a more valuable audience arrives.

The new value chain

The old measurement logic looked like this:

The new value chain is longer — and every step can be measured:

Appearance→ AI citation→ Brand recognition→ Quality visit→ Conversion

Which Hungarian websites may be most affected by the change?

The impact is not uniform — it varies significantly by page type and industry.

Informational content

Pages built around simple definitions, short explanations and general questions may be the most vulnerable. In these cases, AI can often summarize the answer directly and completely — leaving no real reason to click through.

Online stores

Some basic product descriptions may be summarized, but prices, stock information, comparisons, customer reviews, detailed specifications and purchase conditions still justify clicks. For online stores, therefore, the issue is not their existence, but the redesign of their content strategy.

Local service providers

For dentists, contractors, agencies, consultants and other local service providers, credibility, geographic relevance, reviews and Google Business Profile may become even more important. AI answers tend to cite clearly identifiable, trustworthy local entities.

Expert and B2B services

For complex, high-value decisions, the AI summary acts more like a pre-filter. The user will still need references, methodology, expert profiles and a way to contact the provider — none of which can be replaced by a single summary. How should the SEO strategy of Hungarian companies change?

1. Traditional search engine optimization must not be abandoned

Indexability, page speed, mobile-friendly display, internal linking, content relevance and a credible link profile remain fundamental requirements. AI Overviews builds on these systems — a company that is weak here will not appear in the answers either. 2. Full question areas must be covered instead of isolated keywords

Instead of optimizing a single page for one keyword, it is worth building a thematic content system. The homepage, service pages, guides, comparisons and FAQs work well when they reinforce one another — because AI systems “think” in topics, not isolated pages.

3. Short, citable answers must be provided

Every important section should begin with a two- or three-sentence answer that also makes sense on its own — exactly like the highlighted answer block in this article. This can then be followed by a more detailed explanation, example or case study. AI is more likely to extract a passage that can stand on its own without additional context.

4. Original knowledge must replace generic text

AI can generate generic information that can be found anywhere. What it cannot replace is original knowledge:

  • first-hand experience and specific work processes;
  • Hungarian market examples and real customer questions;
  • expert opinions and original data or research;
  • verifiable results and case studies.

5. The author and the business must be visible

It should be clear who wrote the article, what experience they have, which business they represent, when the content was updated, and which sources the claims are based on. Credibility is not decoration; it is a ranking and citation factor. How can a Hungarian website be included in Google AI summaries?

Let’s start with the most important point: guaranteed inclusion does not exist, and anyone promising it should be avoided. However, there are methods that can demonstrably improve the chances of selection:

  • Collect the real questions of your target audience. Do not think in short keywords, but in complete problems — the way your customers actually phrase them.
  • Provide a direct answer after the heading. The first paragraph should summarize the most important information; the details can come afterward.
  • Support your claims. Professional sources, data, examples and first-hand experience — AI favors reliably supported content.
  • Build a consistent brand entity. The company name, services, experts and geographic operating area should appear consistently across all important surfaces.
  • Use appropriate structured data. This includes organization, person, article, product, local business and breadcrumb markup.
  • Update content regularly. Dates, authors and changes should be visible.
  • Build external credibility signals. Professional appearances, relevant references, interviews, reviews and PR articles strengthen brand awareness — also in the eyes of AI systems.

And one reassuring fact: according to Google’s official guidance, there is no need for special “AI files” or technical tricks created only for AI. Well-built SEO foundations and unique, useful content remain the most important factors. How can the impact of AI Overviews be measured?

The biggest mistake a company can make is to look only at the total number of organic visits. In the AI era, this metric can be misleading — traffic may decline while business results improve. Instead, it is worth tracking this set of metrics:

  • number of organic impressions and click-through rate by query type;
  • changes in branded searches;
  • engaged sessions, quote requests and contact inquiries;
  • revenue and value per lead;
  • brand mentions and cited pages in AI answers;
  • AI visibility share compared with competitors.

There is good news from the measurement side: on June 3, 2026, Google announced a Search Console report that separates generative search appearances. The feature is rolling out gradually and may provide a separate view of visibility across AI Overviews, AI Mode and other generative search surfaces — meaning that what previously had to be examined manually can finally be tracked with data.

Preparation is not a one-time project, but a structured process. Here is what it looks like in three 30-day phases:

  • Identify the pages bringing the most important organic traffic.
  • Examine the questions and queries affected by AI summaries.
